Maybe this is the year Geoff Keighley fully takes over. Wes has been covering games and hardware for more than 10 years, first at tech sites like The Wirecutter and Tested before joining the PC Gamer team in Wes plays a little bit of everything, but he'll always jump at the chance to cover emulation and Japanese games. When he's not obsessively optimizing and re-optimizing a tangle of conveyor belts in Satisfactory it's really becoming a problem , he's probably playing a year-old RPG or some opaque ASCII roguelike.
With a focus on writing and editing features, he seeks out personal stories and in-depth histories from the corners of PC gaming and its niche communities. Everyone, as far as Sony is concerned, wins. Another big benefit to this strategy is one of the most obvious: money. Renting out E3 show floor space, a theater venue not everyone can own their own, like Microsoft , and the various other costs that go into a full production around E3 is not cheap — the show floor space alone costs hundreds of thousands of dollars for the week.
Pushing advertising for the PS5 online and on TV with an ambitious ad and press cycle can go a long way. Sony pulling out of E3 again — alongside several other companies downsizing or removing their presence from the show floor — marks the end of the era where E3 was the main hub for gaming news in the industry, and the calendar week everything else revolved around. Nintendo eschewed its traditional conference years ago, though it still holds a presence on the show floor in addition to its yearly E3 Direct.
Microsoft has moved out to the Microsoft Theater next door, operating as part of but E3, yet on its own terms and territory. While it was nice to see an E3 show floor where smaller developers and publishers were able to stand out, without Sony last year, E3 felt quite barren compared to years past seriously, there were moments where the only thing missing was tumbleweeds..
And as for that mainstream attention? If more and more companies continue to pull out of the show, especially major console makers, those magazines and TV stations may be less inclined to tune in. Chances are great that some of the names mentioned here will be present during the Xbox sunday conference.
